C&O 4-6-2 #471 - Chesapeake & Ohio |
Description: |
Built by Alco in 1914 as an F-17 class "Pacific", this locomotive had the distinction of carrying the name "George Washington" while heading up passenger service on the C&O. It originally had 69" drivers and developed 185 psi boiler pressure but after a rebuild in 1934, it was given 74" drivers and could develop a 200 psi boiler pressure. As the way with the rest of steam, it was scrapped by 1952. A Forrest Trittenbach photo. With the help of Mike Woodruff (see comment below), the location is the Icy City engine terminal. Date is approximate. |

Date is estimated 1930's. It was rebuilt in 1946 and it was altered to a 4-6-4 wheel configuration at that time. Appears to be the 21st Street roundhouse under the Ambassador Bridge. Thanks to TK Walters for pointing me in the right direction. |

CNW 4-6-2 #505 - Chicago & North Western |
Description: |
Although an E9 wore the CNW #505 later, the first to do so on the CNW roster was this 1909 Alco-Schenectady built Pacific. It was an E class loco with 75" drivers and could develop a very respectable boiler pressure of 200 psi to feed to its 25"x28" cylinders. The engine weight came in at 260,000 lb and its tractive effort was a medium 39,667 lb. Unfortunately its days of service are fast drawing near as the age of steam is disappearing in the 1950's. |

From Steamlocomotive.com "EW King, Jr., in Drury (1993), notes that the E2s were the first to have Baker valve gear, which he adds became the standard valve motion on the Norfolk & Western. Also, the trailing truck used outside bearings for greater stability." No exact date or location was given for this photo. C.A. Brown photo |
