Long before an F7A carried the B&O number 4622, this beefy 2-8-2 Mikado had the distinct honor. B&O #4622 was built by Baldwin in March of 1923 and proved to be a very veratile locomotive. It was able to serve for nearly 32 years before being retired in November of 1956 at the Mt Clare yard in Baltimore, MD. Description: |
Here is a solid looking 2-8-2 Mikado caught standing outside the Glenwood Shops area in Philadelphia, PA. Built by Baldwin in December of 1922 as Baltimore & Ohio #4480 (serial #55869), it was versatile in freight and passenger service. Unfrotunately after nearly 35 years of service, it was retired and scrapped in August of 1957 at the Mt Clare yard in Baltimore, MD Just prior to retirement, the loco was assigned a new number #453 but probably was not actually renumbered before the scrapper's torch came calling. Specs - Q-4b class, 64" drivers, 220 psi boiler pressure, 26x32" cylinders, engine wt of 327,400 lb, tractive effort of 63,200 lb. An unknown photogrpaher took this photo and no exact day in August of 1956 was given.. |
