Built in 1947 by Budd in Lot #9613-004 as NYC 56 seat chair #2953, 1 of 60 such cars (#2900-#2959) built in that Lot, which was ordered in March 1944; cars were delivered between October 1946 and March 1947. In 1973-1974 and 1976, 52 of these cars were sold to Amtrak as #5630-#5635 and #5640-#5685; the #2953 was sold in 1973 as #5685. Many of these cars were retired and stored, either in 1981 or 1983, including 9 cars which were selected for conversion to HEP (not including the #5685), but after Amfleet II deliveries began, these plans were cancelled and a number of the cars were sold in 1988. I have no records pertaining to when the #5685 was sold, just that it, and several other cars, were retired in October 1983. Scanned with an Epson V550 from an original 35mm slide, brand is unknown. RE-UPLOAD due to missing file. Amtrak 10 roomette-6 double bedroom (10RM-6DB) sleeper #2438 PACIFIC CASTLE in the consist of westbound train #41, the BROADWAY LIMITED, in Harrisburg. Built by Budd in January 1950 in Lot #9660-039 to Pullman Plan #9522 as UP PACIFIC CASTLE, 1 of 50 PACIFIC-series cars built in that Lot, which was ordered in February 1948; cars were delivered between December 1949 and June 1950. Besides PACIFIC EMPIRE, which was wrecked in 1951, the other 49 cars were assigned #14xx-series numbers in 1969, the PACIFIC CASTLE was assigned #1407, which was not applied. 5 cars were sold to the Milwaukee Road in 1969, 1 car was retained by UP, and the other 43 cars were sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #2600-#2642, PACIFIC CASTLE as #2605. Besides 3 which were wrecked during Amtraks first decade, the remaining 40 cars were converted to head end power (HEP) in 3 batches, the 3rd group of 12 cars were converted in 1980-1981 (with 1 roomette combined with the porters room as an ADA room), including PACIFIC CASTLE, which was converted to HEP #2438 in September 1980. Dome lounge, built by AC&F in 1955 in Lot #4096 as UP #9001, assigned to the CITY OF LOS ANGELES, sold in 1972 to the Auto Train Corporation as #901, sold at the 1981 auction to Merrill Ervin (Kankakee, IL) as the CROSS LAKE, later resold to the Green Bay & Western, later to the Fox Valley Western-Wisconsin Central, then io the Algoma Central, reconfigured as a dome coach and renamed ALGOMA COUNTRY.
